Farm Trailer Safety Campaign Set Up by Bereaved Mother

Jane Gurney, whose son Harry was killed in a trailer accident in 2014, is the voice behind a new national trailer safety campaign.

Gurney’s son was killed during a summer job when the trailer he was pulling caused a fatal crash.

The company involved was prosecuted after an investigation found them guilty of a poorly maintained trailer and faulty brakes on the vehicle Gurney was driving.

The new initiative suggests an annual service by an authorised mechanic, in addition to daily checks on trailers. It is accompanied by an eighteen point checklist.

National Trailer and Towing Association spokesperson Sarah Smithurst commented, “Anything that’s hitched on the back of a vehicle needs to be serviced and looked after – it is tonnage that can kill.

“People have to realise that you have to live with it for the rest of your life if it does kill someone – even if it was an accident.”
